Basics of Home Brewing: What is wort?

Beer Kit
Wort is a brewing term that oftentimes refers to unfermented beer. The literal definition of wort is the liquid extracted from the mashing process. However, as brewers often use the word, wort is the end product of your mash, malt extracts, adjuncts, and hops after completing a sanitizing boil. The word is pronounced wert even though it is spelled with an O. It is also good to know that unhopped wort is sometimes called sweet wort whereas hopped wort is called just that—hopped wort. This helps define at what point the wort is during the brewing process.
