Brewing Beer: Blackberry Porter Homebrew – Part 1

We’re brewing this robust porter in the middle of summer and there’s plenty of blackberries that are ripe for picking. We went foraging for wild blackberries and in this video we’re brewing a porter with them. This brew day happens outside at our friend’s farm where he lives in a tiny house with some animals. During the mash we give a tour of his 10 acre farm. We also talk about creative ways to use your spent grain – hint: some animals really like it. This brew day happened on a perfect sunny summer day and we had a lot of fun hanging out and drinking beer with friends. The base for the beer is actually a “robust” Baltic porter. We used Pale Malt, Maris Otter, Crystal 60, Crystal 120, Chocolate Malt, Carafa II, and Melanoiden Malt. We mashed at 152. Our estimated pre-boil gravity was 1.054. We added Columbus hops at the boil (60 minutes), Whirlfloc at 15 minutes, and Willamette at 15 minutes as well.

We added an English Ale yeast (White Labs WLP002) and fermented in the high 60’s during primary. We’ll do a secondary and add the blackberries as well.
