I received this as a gift and I was pleasantly surprised with how it turned out. Ive been home brewing for quite a few years and I normally brew all-grain five gallon batches.
I figured I would use this as a replacement for my stir plate for making a yeast starter. The kit comes with a small can of hopped liquid malt extract and the process of mixing it together in the fermenter was as quick as advertised.
I was planning on using yeast I had on hand, but it turned out I was mistaken and I didnt have it on hand, so I used the small sachet that came in the kit.
I used bottled water and let it ferment out. The OG was 1.041 and the FG was 1.012. I bottled into the 1.0 liter bottles provided.
I normally dissolve all my bottling sugar into the beer first, but the kit came with a convenient measuring scoop for priming each bottle individually.
Once it was carbonated the beer tasted quite good. The malt kit called itself a pilsener, but as you can see in the pic it is a bit dark for a pilsener.
It carbonated up nice, was clear, tasted clean and had a nice hop finish.I really liked the shape of the fermenter. Years ago I was gifted with a Mr. Beer fermenter and I found this one to be much easier to handle and clean.
The conical bottom was very nice. You cant drop the yeast, but the bottling spigot is above the conical region and easily leaves the yeast behind.
It worked very well for the yeast that came with it, but I will have to see how it will work if Im growing up a full vial of yeast.This is a very nice kit for anyone who wants to make small batches of beer, and is especially easy for anyone who is interested in getting into the hobby.
Im going to use it for growing up yeast for larger batches of beer, and for experimental small batch brewing.
