Woodforde’s Wherry Extract Kit vs All Grain Clones | Brew a Champion British Beer

Since we started brewing beer we’ve always been Team All Grain and slightly suspicious of extract kits – but is this fair? Here we put it to the test by brewing Woodforde’s own extract kit of their popular amber session ale Wherry alongside two all grain clones of our own creation. The result of the blind tasting was interesting and unexpected so the Clone Wars saga will definitely continue!

CLONE RECIPE:
20 litre batch – 71°C strike temp
Pale Malt 3600g
Caramalt 200g
Crystal 200g
Target OG
Target FG
60 minute mash at 67°C and 10 minute mash out at 77°C
60 minute boil and 30 minute hop stand
Styrian Goldings 8g and Progress 8g at 60 mins
Styrian Goldings 10g and Progress 10g at 30 mins
East Kent Goldings 25g at 5 minutes
Wyeast 1968 London ESB (or Wyeast 1469 West Yorkshire Ale if you prefer a fruitier aroma)
